What is a work of art? A word made flesh. That is the truth, in the clearest sense of the text. A word, that which emanates from mind. Made flesh; a thing, a thing seen, a thing known, the immeasurable translated into terms of the measurable. From the highest to the lowest that is the substance of works of art. And it is a rhetorical activity; for whether by ministry of angles or of saints or by the ministry of common workmen, gravers or gravediggers, we are all led heavenwards.
